PoppyLove and war. Two words that should have little association, but to me the two go hand in hand. Both are a tragedy. They rip you open and spit you out. The war killed my husband, Connor, shattered my will to live, and took my best friend. Brandon may not have physically died in that war, but his soul did. And now we’re left to pick up the wreckage. Expected to move on when all that is left is the ruins of a life we once had.

War. It took everything from me, even myself. When you’re only able to exist, death seems like a blessing. Pain…a welcome distraction. I ran from everything associated with my past, and then she found me, fighting, drowning myself in whisky, trying to forget. She reminds me of Connor, of what I’ve lost—what we’ve lost. In the midst of destruction, she’s a salvation I don’t deserve.

I shouldn’t love him.

I shouldn’t love her.

Love is a war we never should have fought.

War Poppy
Nicole Lynne

I am totally gutted. Devastated. From the prologue to the last page, I felt my heart breaking repeatedly. War Poppy by Nicole Lynne (writing duo of Stevie J. Cole and L.P. Lovell) was emotional, raw, and just devastating. An emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. A heartbreaking story of war, loss, love and destruction.

Poppy, Connor and Brandon have been best friends for years. Since the first day Conner saw her across the playground. They became inseparable. Both loved her, but one did not feel worthy of her. Years later we meet them after the death of Poppy’s husband, Connor, and Brandon’s devastation of losing his best friend, his brother.

Poppy is lost and alone. She not only lost her husband the day he died serving his country, but she also lost her best friend. Nowhere to be found, lost and at the brink of losing everything, she is determined to find and save Brandon. He is all she has left. Walking away from her life, she goes after Brandon, the one person who has always been there for her and has saved her time-and-time again.

Brandon has lost everything that ever mattered to him. The one person who was like a brother to him, his best friend, even a bit of himself. Barely surviving, he ran from everything he knew and is drowning himself in woman, whiskey and fighting. The guilt of surviving, of what he saw and what he did are slowly sinking him.

The last person he ever expected to see again was Poppy, but there she is. She is not leaving and is intent of saving him, even at the cost of herself. He does all he can to drive her away, but at the end, he needs her. With her, he finds a little piece of salvation. Even if for only a little while.

But what happens when the person you love is slowly falling apart? There is love there, that is never in question. But Brandon struggles with life outside of the military and the memories that are suffocating him. He wants to make Poppy happy, but has no idea where to begin. All Poppy wants is the Brandon she knew and has always loved and to get him the help he so desperately needs.

I loved Poppy and Brandon. Both were just so lost and broken. My heart broke for them. But were they good for each other? Maybe before the war. They struggled and hurt so much once they found each other again. It was just such a devastating journey. And their friends, I just loved them! From Larry, to Haven, to Kyan, Finn and Hope.

There is so much more I wish I could share, but this is a story that really needs to be experienced. I loved and hated (in a good way) every second of this story. Even in the happy moments, you knew it was to be short lived.

In the end, a future for these two is so hard to see, even as we want to see it for them. Their love is both their salvation and their devastation. The ending blew me away. The journey is devastating, hopeful, heartbreaking and heart-wrenching. This is not an easy read, but well worth every minute of it.
