I felt like I was living in a prison while watching Raine Carson from my window, studying his sexy, tanned, and muscular physique for six long months. From inside of my house, he was perfect.

Then I found out everything looked different from afar. Raine, a blunt and hot tempered man was living a life he wasn’t proud of, and I found myself oddly attracted to the sickening reality he opened my eyes to.

She thought I’d fall for her seductive ploy and scarlet-glossed lips. She was right. Every person in this small town had something negative to say about Haven Leigh’s life—the girl who had been handed everything on a silver platter. I ignored the rumors, and instead, searched for her truths.

While struggling with disabling side-effects left behind by my coke-addict mother, Haven became the hope I needed. She was the good I wanted to be.

But, as it turns out, she was the trouble I should have stayed away from.

Raine's Haven
Shari J. Ryan

Shari J. Ryan tells stories that are heartbreaking and consuming. Raine’s Haven was no different. This is a story of two people who come from completely different worlds. One stolen and the other lost, but who find they share more than they ever thought possible.

Raine Carson came into this world already struggling. Suffering with the side-effects from his drug addicted mother, he realizes early on how hard life can be. But he had what he needed in his grandfather. Determined to raise Raine to be a good man, his grandfather gives him the best life he can. But life-altering changes take Raine to rock bottom.

Raine broke my heart. He was a good man who was dealt a bad hand in life. Even so, he was determined to change his life, even as he was met with wall after wall blocking his way. Though when we first meet him, he was not a good guy to Haven, we begin to see the man he truly is. He wanted to protect not only himself, but also Haven. But in the end, he could not resist her.

Haven, on the other hand, outwardly looked like the girl who had everything and wanted for nothing. But she harbored secrets and lies behind the façade her parents lived. Refusing to succumb to her parent’s level, she hides away from the world. Except for every Saturday when he comes to work on the grounds of her house. She is drawn to Raine. But in the end, would she cause him more harm than good?

The first half of this story gives us how Raine and Haven meet and some background on their lives. We know not all is at it seems, but what lies and secrets does each hold? Will it only hurt them in the end? Choices are made that lead to chaos and destruction for them both.

I enjoyed Raine and Haven’s story, though the first half was a bit on the slower side, once you reach the mid-point, it pulls it all together. We need the first half to get us through what they endure to try and be together. With so many secrets and lies, can they ever really find their way?

Raven’s background and circumstances that led him to where is when he meets Haven nearly break me. To feel so alone and lost and see him attempt to get through this was heartbreaking. Haven had so much to learn when she was young. She had a lot of growing up to do in some ways. All she knew is she did not want to become what her parents were.

This was a story that really touched me. Understanding Raine endears him to the reader. Even after, when he should have been way to angered at Haven, he followed his heart. This was both a heartbreaking story and one that fills you some hope that in the end things will work as needed.
