Rough Around the Soul
Maria Monroe

4.5 stars

I loved Rough Around the Soul by Maria Monroe. It was sweet and charming with a touch of forbidden. A story about two people facing their own struggles and trying to find their way.

Melanie Cannon is an eighteen-year-old senior, but in her short life, she has known desperation and disappointment. More than any person her age should ever face. Having basically raised herself, the only thing she dreams of is leaving Bells Park. Her only chance, attend college and make something of herself. Now, because of a friend that should have stood up for her, she is taking the blame for drugs that are not hers.

I loved Melanie. She was drowning in so much disappointment, but she was also so strong, determined and loyal. Which is amazing from a person who literally had no one to count on for most of her life. She was beautiful, kind and determined to make something of her life, even as obstacle after obstacle stood in her way.

Detective Jake Beck is lost. After a tragedy shook him to the core and feeling his life moving in a direction he was not prepared. When his uncle asked for his help, he accepted. He needed a change of pace to help him redirect his life. What he did not expect was a to meet Melanie and how he would change his life. Or that she would be one of his students in the drug education class he was leading.

Though Jake is a bit lost right now as he is sorting his life out, he is strong, caring and determined to do the right thing. Even as the gorgeous, courageous student with the sad eyes and even harder life in his class tests his strength at every turn.

Though Melanie is 18 and Jake is 25 and a cop, their story is so charming. Jake tries to do the right thing, but Melanie touches his heart in a way no one else ever has. When Melanie is with Jake, she feels safe and happy. He gives her a security she has never known. Their connection is strong and their chemistry is off the charts.

I truly enjoyed Rough Around the Soul. There were so many feels and times my heart just broke. It was really such a sweet story about two very unexpected people who found each other when they least expect it. How could something so wrong feel so right? A great read I would highly recommend.
