Some stories are a fairytale…but this isn’t one.

Caelan Gregory’s life fell apart the night he went home and opened the door to find his whole family murdered. Since then, his life has held no meaning. He’s angry. He’s bitter. He’s barely human anymore. There’s nothing left to remind him of the straight A student, and football quarterback he once was…but he wasn’t a good person then, and he’s certainly not a good person now. He’s retreated into a world where all that exists is numbness and his passion for painting.

When Sutton Hale moves into the apartment across the hall from Caelan she’s not prepared for her reaction to him. Something in his broken blue eyes calls to her—after all she’s always had an irrational need to fix everything.

But Caelan doesn’t do relationships or feelings. He does drugs and alcohol. However, he can’t ignore his desire to get to know the raven-haired woman across the hall.

Two broken souls trying to mend one another.

But not everything can be fixed.

In the end, Caelan and Sutton will have to learn that there is beauty in the ashes.

Author Bio

Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I am so conflicted. Truly and honestly conflicted. But let me start at the beginning. This book has one of the most heartbreaking prologues I have ever read. Reading the devastation of one person’s life over the course of one night was gut wrenching.

Caelen Gregory’s life was forever changed the night he found his entire family murdered. Lost, broken and alone, he finds solace in alcohol and drugs. He does not know how to live without being numb. Disconnected from everyone and disliked by his neighbors, he spends his time painting.

Sutton Hale is ready to start a new life. Running from a past that nearly destroyed her, she is determined to put it all behind her. Moving to a new state, she moves in across from Cael. Her reaction to him surprises her, because the last thing she needs is to be attracted to a man like Cael. Putting up a front, she wants everyone to believe she is strong and able to stand on her own two feet. She keeps everyone far enough to never get to close.

Cael does not do relationships. They require more work than he is willing to give. So, when he meets his new neighbor he knows she is trouble. He is determined to stay as far away from her as he can. But an attraction like theirs simmers until it finally burns.

Can two broken people heal each other and find love or will they destroy each other at the end? Or can one person mend you to move forward with your life as needed?

Here is where it gets complicated. Going in you expect one story, but what you get is a very different one. Many will be disappointed; however, this was such an incredibly written story about two broken people who stumble into each other’s lives when they need it most. But what happens when the flame finally burns out? What you find in the ashes my not be what you expected, and that is okay.

At the end of the day, an author gives us the story they need tell. It may not be the one you were expecting, but nonetheless can be an amazing story. This is what Beauty in the Ashes by Micalea Smeltzer was, an amazing story of mending the broken pieces and being able to move forward.
