A forced sentence leads to a reckless passion…….

When my husband walked out on me over a year ago, it devastated me. When the divorce papers came, it killed me. When we had to sell our house, it broke me.

But then he moved in with his new flavor of the month and told our daughter his new woman wasn’t into children. That pissed me off.

Now Riley feels abandoned, and I can’t make it better; no matter how hard I try. I’m desperate to help her adjust to the loss of a male figure in her life. The companion program that matches adults up with children who have loneliness and abandonment issues is my last hope.

The counselors tell me he’s doing community service hours, and I ask to sit in on his meetings with Riley. The minute I see him astride the matte black Harley, I know neither my nor Riley’s life will ever be the same again.

Community Service. Two words I should be thankful for, but I’m not. I resent the hours it’s away from building my business. The two previous kids I’d been paired up with didn’t work out because their mothers were more interested in getting in my bed. This next match with a little girl is my last hope. Unless this kid works out, I’m destined to serve time.

When they push her into the room wearing pink converse with a black dress, her crazy curls barely held back by the barrette in her hair, and studious glasses on her face, I can tell she’s scared – of new people, of change, of being pushed aside. Something inside of me breaks, and I want this girl to feel wanted again.

What I’m unprepared for is meeting her mom. The second our hands touch, there are fireworks, bright lights, and a picture of the future I could one day have. The future I’ve never allowed myself to wish for.

Community service becomes more than a chore, more than time I resent for being taken away from me. In the months that follow, I realize they’re just like me: they’ve been abandoned, left behind by the world, forgotten by those who should love them.

Thanks to the one last hope in both our lives – we found the light in the darkness we’d been searching for.

Trick by Laramie Briscoe was a nice surprise. It was a sweet slow-burning romance with little to almost no angst. And sometimes that is all you need from a book. The story pulled me right from the start.

Patrick Tennyson, Trick, learned the hard way how much you can lose when you make the wrong choices. He is ready to turn his life around and make the right choices going forward. But before he can, he needs to serve his community service to stay out of prison. To do that, he has been paired with a child that has no father figure in their life. Simple, right? Not when the all the moms want a piece of him too!

I loved Trick. He was not a perfect man. He knew this, but he wanted to change his life going forward. He wanted to build his business, serve his community service time and move on. But one look at Riley, his last chance, and he was a goner. He was all in. He saw a kindred spirit in her and knew all she wanted was to be wanted and loved. He was so ready to give her that. He stole my heart right from the start.

All Hadley wants is to give her daughter, Riley, a good life, but also to know she is loved and wanted. But how do you do that when Riley’s father walked away from both without a backwards glance? Knowing she needs to do something before her daughter becomes more withdrawn, she puts her in a program to be paired up with a male figure to help fill the void. But can an ex-con provide the guidance her daughter needs and deserves?

Hadley is also struggling. After her husband so carelessly walked away, she was determined to make it on her own. But how do you do that and provide everything your child needs as well? Feeling the strain of being a single parent, struggling to make ends meet and feelings of loss and loneliness, she has no one to turn too.

When they meet, both Riley and Hadley are drawn to Trick, but knowing she cannot risk her heart or her daughter’s, Hadley keeps her walls up. But Trick is determined to be there for Riley, and her mom. Not understanding what he is feeling, he follows his heart this time.

What we get is a sweet story of three people learning to open up and let love in. As they spend time together and get to know each other, we see Riley blossom and Hadley’s wall begin to crumble. Hadley also begins to see Trick beyond his past and all he can offer.  And Trick finally realizes he can have all he never knew he wanted.

I really enjoyed this book. I love when I finish a book and it leaves me with a smile! Trick left me with not only a big smile but a happy feeling as well. A great quick romance with all the right feels.
