From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.

In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman’s daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working.

Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

Don't Speak
Katy Regnery

Don’t Speak by Katy Regnery was my first book by this author and I loved it. Just loved it. This is part of the author’s A Modern Fairytale stories and this is her modern take on A Little Mermaid.

This is the story of a fisherman’s daughter with dreams of a life outside her little world and the governor’s son, who dreams of more than what is expected of him. Two people from very different worlds. One is sheltered and the other knows to well how harsh and demanding the world can be.

Laire Cornish has grown up on Corey Island, an island that has literally been untouched by time, all her life. Sheltered and tied by strict beliefs, Laire dreams of going to college up north and working in fashion and design. But on the island, dreams consist of marrying from within, having kids and being content with what you have. But Laire wants more out of life.

Erik Rexford, the governor’s son, has his life all planned for him. His dreams do not matter, only what would benefit the family. But for now, he has Duke, his hockey team, his sister and his closest friends and an entire summer ahead of him.

Erik and Laire meet one fateful night and are drawn to each other immediately. Laire is swept away by Erik, who is charming, sweet and caring. He introduces her to a world she never dreamed off. Erik is taken by Laire’s innocence and naivete. She is so different from the woman he is surrounded with. Together they are swept up in first love and spend as much as they can together that summer. Scared of what is happening between them, Erik tells Laire, “We make our own rules.”

I loved Laire and Erik. Though Laire was young and innocent, she stood by her beliefs as much as she could. She was strong, even when she was scared of what was happening and what it could cost them. Erik was so sweet and caring. He never pressured Laire, asking for only what she was willing to give. As the summer passed, the beginning of love stirred between them. It was their fairytale come true. But as the summer neared to an end, what would become of them?

Without warning, the rug is pulled out from under them and they are ripped apart. Secrets, lies and guilt come between them. One is determined to make her dreams come through, even without love, while the other turns bitter and lost. Until years later fate brings them together again. But can they overcome all that has stood between them?

This was a magical story of two people meant to be together, but struggle to find their happily ever after. At times, sweet and charming and at others heartbreaking, but always consumed by their story. This is a must read for lovers of romance.
