Four Crows
Lily White

As soon as I read the blurb for Four Crows by Lily White I knew I wanted to read this book. And I was not disappointed. This story had me captivated. It was all-consuming. It was a tragic and heart-wrenching story of loss and devastation.

Maggie Crow did not ask to be born into the family she grew up with. She loved her father dearly and knew she was loved and treasured deeply by him. Her brothers? Well they were a different story, but as long as her dad was around, she knew she was as safe as can be. At least as safe as anyone can be when raised by monsters. Because that is what her father and brothers were.

She did not always know what her family was, but once she did, she felt powerless to change anything. What could she do? This was her family. In the beginning of the story, Maggie was a bit lost and despondent and at times weak and scared. But we saw her change and fight for what she wanted, even it if was not always the right thing, in her heart it was.

Elliot McLaughlin did not plan on becoming a husband and father at a very young age, but sometimes your dealt with cards you can’t change. Nobody knew this better than Elliot. To support the family he loved, he joined the Marines. He saw and did terrible things, but nothing could prepare him for what he would find when he returned.

Elliot comes back to find his family missing. No clues, no bodies, nothing. It is as if they just vanished. But their loss changes him and he vows revenge on those who stole what he valued most. Elliot was such a strong and brave man who lost his way. He did horrible things and hurt an innocent girl, and though he called himself a monster, he was just a broken and devastated man.

Lies and vengeance bring Maggie and Elliot together. One looking to escape the horrors of life and the other looking for answers he craved. But what they never expected was to find in each other what they least expected to need, want or desire. My heart continuously broke for Maggie and Elliot. They suffered such unspeakable horror at the hands of others. There seemed no end to what life threw at them.

Elliot is determined to avenge his family at all cost. But as he gets closer to the truth, can he let Maggie be pawn in his revenge? And at what cost? Will finding out the truth bring him the peace he so desperately wants and needs?

Four Crows is a dark story full of tragedies and despair. There are some very hard subjects in this story that may be hard for some, but it is a compelling story. I was consumed. I could not stop reading. Terrified of how it would end, but needing to know. It is hard to say I loved such a dark story, but I did. The author did an amazing job ensuring the readers felt every emotion, every tragedy and every heartbreak. Truly a great suspenseful read. Another must read for 2017.
